Monologue Analysis.

This extract is a monologue analysis from the novel Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë

''MRS. LINTON: How long is it since I shut myself in here? It seems a weary number of hours ... it must be more. I remember being in the parlour after they had quarrelled, and Edgar being cruelly provoking, and me running into this room desperate. As soon as ever I had barred the door, utter blackness overwhelmed me, and I fell on the floor. I couldn't explain to Edgar how certain I felt of having a fit, or going raging mad, if he persisted in teasing me! I had no command of tongue, or brain, and he did not guess my agony, perhaps: it barely left me sense to try to escape from him and his voice. Before I recovered sufficiently to see and hear, it began to be dawn, and, Nelly, I'll tell you what I thought, and what has kept recurring and recurring till I feared for my reason. I thought as I lay there, with my head against that table leg, and my eyes dimly discerning the grey square of the window, that I was enclosed in the oak-panelled bed at home; and my heart ached with some great grief which, just waking, I could not recollect. I pondered, and worried myself to discover what it could be, and, most strangely, the whole last seven years of my life grew a blank! I did not recall that they had been at all. I was a child; my father was just buried, and my misery arose from the separation that Hindley had ordered between me and Heathcliff. I was laid alone, for the first time; and, rousing from a dismal doze after a night of weeping, I lifted my hand to push the panels aside: it struck the table-top! I swept it along the carpet, and then memory burst in: my late anguish was swallowed in a paroxysm of despair. I cannot say why I felt so wildly wretched: it must have been temporary derangement; for there is scarcely cause. But, supposing at twelve years old I had been wrenched from the Heights, and every early association, and my all in all, as Heathcliff was at that time, and been converted at a stroke into Mrs. Linton, the lady of Thrushcross Grange, and the wife of a stranger: an exile, and outcast, thenceforth, from what had been my world. You may fancy a glimpse of the abyss where I grovelled! Shake your head as you will, Nelly, you have helped to unsettle me! You should have spoken to Edgar, indeed you should, and compelled him to leave me quiet! Oh, I'm burning! I wish I were out of doors! I wish I were a girl again, half savage and hardy, and free; and laughing at injuries, not maddening under them! Why am I so changed? why does my blood rush into a hell of tumult at a few words? I'm sure I should be myself were I once among the heather on those hills. Open the window again wide: fasten it open! Quick, why don't you move?''

This pragmatical, enticing monologue had been something that caught my eye, during my time browsing through the internet. What makes it incredibly diverse is the fact that it is written in a way that she is talking to herself and nobody else. Also, this type of monologue included with a wide range of different frameworks. Although I do not have much knowledge about the novel, as well as the monologue, the language used throughout this monologue can entice a wide range of readers, because it is pragmatical. The whole meaning of pragmatics is how we know what language means when it is used in a specific context, sometimes described as 'reading between the lines'.

Within this monologue, you will have to take a deeper thought and read between the lines on what is said. For example, 'How long is it since I shut myself in here?' makes us intellectually think who locked her in there, or did she lock herself? We continuously read between the lines and constantly try to comprehend what she is trying to say throughout her monologue. Also, the grammar used within the monologue is linked to the olden times, as well as the punctuation. ''I felt so wildly wretched:'' in that quote, you can see that the speech is included with a wide range of different punctuation marks, such as the colon, ':' The colon is generally used when listing different objects. However, this speech had included a colon while the monologue is carrying on, which illustrates that this speech had been written from the olden times.
Another framework that I had witnessed is the use of Lexis - meaning of the word choice that they have included. In this speech they had put in 'arose' which is a frozen type of register, with a combination of lexis, the vocabulary of the language is a frozen type of register. Due to the fact that 'arose' is hardly ever mentioned within peoples' conversations, society today have a more informal/colloquial register.

Throughout the duration of my time browsing through the internet, I witnessed this rather interesting topic that I would never have thought of publishing. After hours and hours of searching a blog, I finally found an interesting topic which will hopefully engage YOU, my readers.

This topic had been taken out from the blog called 'The Verge' which, I presume, is a hit blog. One topic that caught my eye instantly was about Apples state-of-the-art, unique new software named the iOS 7. The use of rhetorical questions within the heading, which is written in a rather huge font, included with bold writing in order to entice the reader to realise the way the old software hugely differs from the new iOS 7 software. ''iOS 7 apps are prettier, but are they better?'' Who knows...

The type of font, as well as the writing gives a graphologic meaning in reference to the readers - meaning how the design of a text can contribute to a meaning including use of fonts, graphics, colours, etc.

Additionally, one other thing caught my eye too. Not only the way the writing has been written visually and graphologically, but the words used throughout the topic on the blog gives other peoples' intellectual minds to reconsider about how others orally talk about the brand new design on Apple. ''a few new apps prove that beauty doesn't have to be skin deep'' What this blog is directly trying to address to us is that we all realise visually about how the new iOS 7 is laid out, e.g the new image of the apps, it illustrates the beauty of the new iOS 7, which you can not compare to a human being. Hence the term 'Skin deep'.

Personally, there are a range of different techniques I would use on my blog, that is on the verge's blog. The use of deep meanings throughout the subheading is one that I will publish more often within my blog.

Homework

A Girl by Ezra Pound
The tree has entered my hands,
The sap has ascended my arms,
The tree has grown in my breast-
Downward,
The branches grow out of me, like arms.

Tree you are,
Moss you are,
You are violets with wind above them.
A child - so high - you are,

And all this is folly to the world.

This famous poem as an outstanding type of meaning, as well as using all sorts of punctuation, such as the hyphen '-' The way the writer creates this is by making it seem as if it is a comma, however they had removed the comma and included a hyphen to create a strong affect during the duration when you are reading the poem orally. The meaning of this unique poem, I presume, is about an individual, who is an ordinary human that is slowly transferring into a tree, due to the fact that one part of the poem includes ''The branches grow out of me, like arms'' meaning that the branches are creating an affect as if it is her own arms. Additionally, the writer also includes 'tree you are' which suggests that she is referring herself as a tree, rather than a human being.

Also, the different type of frameworks are included, such as as including a range of different terminology. The type of grammar, as well as the syllable is similar to a type of register, which is called Frozen Register. This is because the way it is sounded out is different to the way individuals speak in our society today. Also, a type of personification is included within this poem. I assume this because the writer is referring to 'A Girl' as a tree by saying 'The tree has entered my hands' which makes me suggest that the tree is spreading all over her body, to transfer from a human being, to something that isn't human nor is it alive.

Armstrong and Miller - RAF Pilots - D Day.

Two Pilots: Armstrong and Miller.

This hilarious, yet realistic background clip is about two individuals, who happen to be RAF pilots who are about to fight D Day, are on a boat filled with other passengers who are about to go out to war. This clip is filled with an insane amount of humour. The style of this comedy was somewhat very vintage, and was set in black and white, to show that it was set it in the olden times, when the World Wars had been present. Throughout the first part of the clip, you can instantly witness that the two RAF pilots happen to be wearing baby swimming products, which fills the clip with loads of humour. The writer plays with the language in a wide range of ways. Firstly, the writer has used the specific type of word, which is ''Man!'' that is used at the end of a majority of ever sentence they say, this relates to slang.

Additionally, the way they are conversing, they highly understand each other in regard to the dialect. One of the pilots say ''He must be a colossal gaylord'' and the other pilot replies ''True Man!'' implies that they are speaking in their own dialect. What I mean by dialect is that the features of vocabulary and grammar show the user belonging to a particular regional group.

Secondly, I have also found some interesting type of terminology contained throughout the clip, which was rather hilarious and amazingly funny, and I, myself, had also found it rather interesting. The writer contained some Rhetorical Questions. ''Do I Look like a mad racist?'' which tells us that there are a range of different terminology used throughout the clip. What highly interested me is the fact that the way they speak throughout the clip is not so similar to as we speak today in our modern society. Language has developed into a more slang form over the years, rather than mild frozen register. However, the language used within this clip is considered as midly formal, due to the fact that there are no broken words, or shortened down.

The way the script is written as a colloquial type of register, because it is not literary, or highly formal. What I have also witnessed is the vocabulary of the language, which connects to the terminology called lexis. An appropriate amount of lexis is used throughout the clip. For e.g. 'colossal' the vocabulary used within this clip is linked to the olden times, because language varies as the years pass by.

Homework.

For this type of homework, I have been given to choose a wide range of different registers to transform with.
So, I have picked an article talking about members of society to participate in a charity event to help cancer in the Downs, Clifton.

The article's grammatical techniques, as well as the choice of words has been a formal type of piece, and also because it had been published by The Guardian.

Real article in its original register: (FORMAL)

''CAN YOU TOUGH IT OUT IN THE BIG CHARITY CHALLENGE?

A PERSONAL trainer is organising a team of 100 people to attempt the Tough Mudder charity. James Stadders, 31, from Redland, has already gathered 70 thrill-seekers and is hoping to put together the biggest team so far to enter the 12-mile obstacle course designed by the British Special forces. In Newport on September 21, participants will have to work together to fight their way though a gruelling course of mud, fire, ice, and water, and 10,000 volts of electricity. The Team led by James and colleague Josh Gibson, are hoping to raise £10,000 for pill-based charity Penny Brohn Cancer Care, which supported by their friend Genevieve Evans, 27, who battled cancer last year and is now in remission. Genevieve was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on her 26th birthday in February 2012. She has surgery to remove her tumour from her tongue, and lymph nodes from her neck.''

''My unique transformation via the text above: (INFORMAL)

This personal trainer, whose a bloke, is organising a team of a whole bunch of peoples to try and join in a new challenge called TOUGH MUDDER. which is going to charity after we join in, then the money wil go to charity and wil hopefully raise ten thoussand pounds. A bloke from Redland, whose 31, asked loads and loads of others to take part. In the end he reached and got 70 people taking part in the 12-mile obsztacle race. It was happilly dezigned by the british special forces. in newport, on september 21st, people will need to work as a whole to battle their way though this course. It has too many unpleasant things.   Like mud fire ice, and water, and 10,000 volts of dangerous electricity.    This team is led by a bloke called james and his colleague josh gibson  are trying to raise a big bunch of money up to 10 000 pounds for a pill based charity.    Called penng brohn cancer care.   which supported by their friend genevieve adams 27, who survived a heavy case of cancer in the previous year. wow! but shes in remission now. genevieve was diagnosed with a severe case of squamous cell caricona on her bday last year in 2012. Deeka's Life.

It was a husky, clear night. During the month of Spring, April. The flowers had gradually began to rise up. On the 25th of April. in the classic year of ninety ninety seven, at approximately 1:24am, an individual had blissfully been welcomed to earth. The birth had been located in the unique rural parts of Lund, Sweden. The rapid tension, as well as the atmosphere had been astonishing, while Deeka's screams and cries had flooded the room with tears. Which presumably seemed like her existence into this world had created an emotional impact towards other individuals in the room. As well as Deeka's mother, and father.

As months leisurely went by, suddenly life had began to create problems for Deeka's Mother and Father. Due to the fact that financial issues had created conflict within the house, which had come to a conclusion that Deeka's Parents, and I had considered moving to England, to create a better life.

As she was calmly settling in to her neighborhood  Deeka had located and settled in to a new secondary school, Brislington Enterprise College, however it is permissible for it to be abbreviated to BEC. Despite the fact that she had nobody to start a companionship with her surroundings. However, after years of attending, she had began to create a strong companionship with other individuals.

Later in life, Deeka had completed school, rewarded with 9 GCSE's, and had later on made a wise decision about starting A Levels, and how her further education will benefit her by achieving an occupation.

More to be read.
Life of Pi Review http://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/dec/23/life-pi-ang-lee-review

He adopts different styles to fit his new subjects, and while there are certain recurrent themes, among them the disruption of families and young people facing moral and physical challenges, there are no obsessive concerns of the sort once considered a necessity for auteurs. He has a fastidious eye for a great image but he also has a concern for language.
His magnificent new film is a version of Yann Martel's Booker prize-winning novel, Life of Pi, adapted by an American writer, David Magee, whose previous credits were films set in England during the first half of the 20th century, Finding Neverland andMiss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. From its opening scene of animals and birds strutting and preening themselves in a sunlit zoo to the final credits of fish and nautical objects shimmering beneath the sea, the movie has a sense of the mysterious, the magical. This effect is compounded by the hallucinatory 3D, and in tone the film suggests Robinson Crusoerewritten by Laurence Sterne.

This astonishing novel/film is an extraordinary, as well as an adventurous true story. The main purpose on the fact why I admire this film is because of the way the story had been laid out, throughout the whole film. The reason why I have chose this is because the reviews had been highly positive and really good. The exciting words that had been used to describe the film such as 'magnificent' and 'fascinating' engaged myself to choose this review. The features that had caught my eye was the photographs used within the review. The dashing images and videos that the review contains are pictures of the Royal Bengal Tiger, as well as the character. It is also a movie that leaves a profound message to all individuals that had been in the same situation in the past. These images are worth noticing, and the videos are well worth watching because it raises an insane amount of questions about the film and how it is produced throughout. Personally, the reason why I think it has been written in a way that has high vocabulary.
